About
Us
The B.C. Bayside Thunder is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and premier community youth basketball program dedicated to serving young athletes from ages 11 to 15 and beyond across Queens County and Long Island of New York.
We take immense pride in fostering a strong, competitive, and supportive community for Asian youth and their families. The middle and high school years are a critical window for athletic and personal development, so one of our main goals is to bridge the gap between local recreational sporting activities and elite, high-level competition, giving our participants the tools, structure, and training platform they need to excel at basketball and as growing young adults.
Our
Mission
Our mission is to empower Asian American youth through advanced basketball tutelage and training, creating an environment where cultural identity, academic focus, exceptional athletic development, and character-building all go hand-in-hand.
Our
Founders

Bob Chin | Founder & Director
For Bob Chin, basketball has never just been a sport—it has been a lifelong love story and a sanctuary. Bob’s journey began five decades ago on the local asphalt and hardwood courts of New York. As a passionate young hooper, the game taught him everything he knows about discipline, brotherhood, and overcoming adversity. He lived for the sound of the ball bouncing, the strategy of outsmarting tough opponents, and the unique community that only takes form on a basketball court.
Now, after 50 years of playing, Bob’s greatest joy is giving the gift of basketball back to the next generation. He founded the B.C. Bayside Thunder out of a deep sense of purpose to serve Asian-American youth in the Queens and Long Island areas of New York. Bob wanted to build a safe, world-class environment where middle and high schoolers could fall in love with the game of basketball just as he did. For Bob, this program isn't about accolades; it is about paying it forward, mentoring young hoopers through the challenge of growing while maturing, ensuring every kid leaves the gym with more confidence, character, and love for the game than when they first walked in.
Chris Chou | Co-Founder
Chris Chou’s life has been shaped by the 30 years he spent growing up through the game of basketball. Chris knows exactly what it's like to be an ambitious kid always with a basketball in hand while chasing big dreams. For him, the court was where he found his confidence, his closest friends, and lifelong dedication to hard work.
Having experienced the positive impact of playing basketball firsthand, Chris co-founded the B.C. Bayside Thunder with a clear, heartfelt intention: to pour his energy, knowledge, and love for the game back into community youth. He deeply understands the challenges, transitions, and social pressures that middle and high school youth face today. Chris’s mission on the court is to be a supportive mentor with a patient, encouraging approach. He is dedicated to helping local community youth master their skills, fall in love with the process of improving themselves along with their teammates, and use basketball as a tool to help them build a bright future.
The
Thunder⚡
Standard
What sets the B.C. Bayside Thunder apart is the caliber of our leadership. Our coaching staff is comprised entirely of current and former high school and college coaches.
We bring collegiate-level training, advanced basketball strategy, and an insider's perspective of what it takes to make a high school varsity or college roster directly to our community. Our coaches don't just run drills; they instill high "basketball I.Q.," teach on-court discipline, and help our kids develop the mental fortitude required to succeed against top-level competition. When you play for the Thunder, you are learning from mentors who have been to where you strive to be.
